A slow morning walk among pines: what to expect

Shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, is not a hike. There is no summit, no distance target and no pace to keep. The morning walk we describe covers about two kilometres through the pines above the rooms, and the point is to move slowly enough to notice things.
The route
The walk is planned to start from the upper terrace early in the morning and to follow a path along the edge of the slope before turning inland through the denser part of the forest. The trees are Japanese black pine, many of them decades old. The canopy is not complete, and in the morning the light comes through the gaps in columns. Underfoot there are pine needles and low coastal scrub.
At a comfortable pace it takes about ninety minutes. The path narrows in two places and one short stretch is uneven. If you have a mobility concern, mention it when you enquire so that the route can be adjusted or skipped.
What we do not claim
People often describe time among trees as calming, and many enjoy it. We make no health or medical claims about it. A walk is not a treatment for anything, and nothing we write here replaces advice from a doctor. If you have a heart condition, a breathing problem or any other reason to be careful with exercise, ask your own doctor before you come and tell us what you can manage.
What we can say from the kitchen side is more modest: people who have walked tend to eat breakfast more slowly afterwards.
After the walk
The walk ends back on the terrace, where tea is poured. The tea follows the season, hojicha in the colder months and a lighter sencha when it is warm. There is no debrief and no group discussion. You sit, drink the tea and look at the water.
Whether the walk runs on a given morning depends on the weather and on our confirming it with you. Heavy fog or rain means a change of plan, and we would tell you the evening before rather than on the path. As with every item on this site, it is arranged by email, not through an online booking.
